National Snoring Awareness Week

by James Ruddick [jamesruddick@summertownclinic.co.uk]

This week is National Snoring awareness week, run by the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea association. Are you one of the 15 million snorers in the UK, does your partner struggle to get a good night’s sleep because of it, or have you taken to sleeping in different rooms as a result?

At the website www.britishsnoring.co.uk there is loads of useful information about snoring, including a free (no-registration) interactive snore test, which highlights some of the factors that might predispose you to being a snorer, and even offers products that you can buy to help reduce your snoring tendency.

The website however misses the role that complementary therapies can play in helping with the probable causes; for example obesity – Maureen Houston our clinical nutritional therapist has completed her Masters degree in obesity and weight management, so is perfectly placed to help, Olly Selway the clinic’s physcial trainer can help encourage functional activity for weight loss, and Abi Strevens can use her cognitive behavioural therapy to encourage positive health choices. Abi could also help with giving up smoking, or alcohol consumption which she does using hypnotherapy and over just a few sessions these habits can be broken.

As an osteopath I can help with issues that might have led to inactivity, for example through previous injury, or if you’re finding it difficult to sleep on your sides at night, as sleep position can be very important. It may also be helpful to treat your jaw to alter the tongue position allowing a clearer airway.

There are also alternative therapeutic interventions for most of the other probable causes; including allergies, and the menopause. So why not find out what type of snorer you are and see if we can help!

If you’d like some more advice about the different therapies mentioned then please feel free to email us or give us a ring on 01865 558561 and we’ll help get you sleeping soundly again.
