Is there another way to treat infections other than antibiotics?

by Joanna Ruddick (Osteopath)

YES!!! Not many people realise that osteopaths can treat all types of infections. In fact osteopathy itself was founded by a man called Andrew-Taylor Still whose 3 children and wife all died of tuberculosis, and he decided there must be a way of preventing this. Osteopathic treatments aim to aid the immune system to fight infections efficiently by –

  • Improving blood supply and drainage to the local area of the infection.
  • Affecting the lymphatic system – tiny channels return excess fluid from all over the body back to the venous system. Much of the immune response works through this system. The chest area is key to the lymphatic system – and the diaphragm and ribs need to be able to move freely in order to fight off infections.
What’s wrong with antibiotics anyway?

Antibiotics can be life-saving and they do have a very large part to play in fighting infectious diseases. The problem is that as well as killing the bad bacteria, they also kill off our beneficial bacteria and upset our gut and disturb the sensitive ecosystem of our gut.

Recent studies have shown that if an infant has antibiotics in the first year of life, they are 45% more likely of eczema; and the more antibiotics in the first year of life, the increased risk of allergies. Antibiotics later in life often leave us exhausted and upset our guts. One course of antibiotics is unlikely to upset adults too much, but when infections become recurrent, I think osteopathy can help play a big part in helping reduce the chances of recurrent infection by supporting the bodies own immune system.
