A Definition of Chiropractic, by our Chiropractors Sally and Nadine
Chiropractic is a primary health care profession concerned with diagnosing, treating and preventing mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects these disorders may have on the function of the nervous system and general health.
Chiropractic care takes a whole body approach and can support you alongside mainstream medicine. Our Oxford based chiropractors are trained to work with people of all ages and stages of life including elderly patients, pregnant patients, babies and children.
The aim of this safe, natural treatment is to improve function of your muscles, joints and nerves, reducing the risk of compensatory patterns, promoting full movement, elevating musculoskeletal health potential and allowing you to take back control!
There is an emphasis on manual treatments including joint adjustment/manipulation and mobilisation and soft-tissue techniques. Alongside hands on techniques, Chiropractors can advise you on rehabilitative exercises including stretching and stabilisation, and other important lifestyle factors like stress management and relaxation, good sleep and nutrition.
Chiropractic is effective in treating both acute and chronic pain. Based on all evidence submitted and reviewed to date, Chiropractic care has been shown to be effective for the following problems:
- General, acute and chronic back pain
- Mechanical neck pain
- Headache (arising from the neck)
- Migraine prevention
- Hip pain caused by osteoarthritis
- Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis
- Ankle sprains
- Plantar fasciitis (a painful foot condition)
- Shoulder dysfunction and pain, including the rotator cuff (key shoulder muscles)
- Elbow pain including tennis elbow
- Minor sports injuries
- Joint pain
- Generalised aches and pains
- Tension and the inability to relax
- Cramp and muscle spasm
You will be fully assessed through a medical history, physical examination and then provided with a full explanation of your condition before treatment begins. If you require medical attention we will be able to refer you appropriately. We have access to Xray and MRI referral if needed.
Most people consult Sally and Nadine because they are in pain and it is their aim to get you feeling better as quickly as possible. Whilst the evidence focuses on stand-alone conditions, our approach focuses on the individual. We are guided by your goals and encompass our vast experience alongside the evidence in supporting you back to better health and equipping you with the knowledge and tools to maintain the best musculoskeletal health you can.
So what to you want to do? Get to the shops independently? Run at international level? Return to work? Play with your children?
